From 2000 to 2010, Texas grew more than at any point in its history, by more than 4.5 million people, most of them settling within a county or two of the Interstate 35 corridor and the stretch of Interstate 10 from San Antonio to Houston. The growth spurt adds four additional seats to the Texas Congressional delegation, with the nation’s second largest state sending 36 representatives to Washington.

Hispanic surge, metro area growth could reshape Texas’ political future
The 2010 census shows sharp population growth in Texas from 2000 — almost 4.5 million people, the greatest increase in the nation.
But according to Murdock, 90 percent of that growth comes from just five areas: Dallas-Arlington-Fort Worth, Houston-Galveston, San Antonio, Austin and the Rio Grande Valley.
Over the same period, 2000 to 2010, 119 Texas counties lost population, most of them in rural West Texas and the Panhandle.

2010 census results give Texas four additional seats in Congress
WASHINGTON – Torrid growth over the last decade has earned Texas four additional seats in Congress – the state’s biggest leap in political clout in a century, far outstripping any other state. “The 2010 Census will serve as a backbone for our political and economic system for years to come,” Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said this morning, announcing the state-by-state population figures at the National Press Club. “This is really an important day for the American people.”
